Frequently Asked Questions

What is your attendance/cancelation policy?

Three excused absences at no charge are allowed during the school year program. We request the courtesy of 24-hour notice but understand this is not always possible, however excessive absences may result in your child losing their spot in the group.   No-shows (no notice of cancellation received) will be billed at the full session rate of $85.00.

Why are groups more effective for social communication therapy?

Social communication is often best worked on in a group setting for several reasons.  The group setting mimics real-life social situations more closely than one-on-one sessions.  Interacting with peers provides kids with opportunities to naturally practice social skills in a safe, supportive environment.  The group also offers support and encouragement from peers who are facing similar challenges.    Groups also provide children the opportunity to engage in real-time problem-solving. They can work together to resolve conflicts, negotiate, and navigate social challenges, which are valuable life skills.

For how many weeks do the social groups meet?

We have a school year program and a summer program.  The school year program begins the week after Labor Day and ends the first week of June.  We close for the usual school holidays and breaks.  The summer program begins the first week of July and ends in mid-August.

When can my child join a group?

We have open enrollment.  Your child can join a group during the school year until May 1st if we have an opening in a group that is a good fit for them at a day/time that works for your schedule.

Who do you work with?

We work with children, teens, and young adults with good language skills many of whom have a diagnosis of ASD Level 1, ADHD/ADD, or Social Anxiety.  Other clients have no formal medical diagnosis. Our clients are intelligent and creative and often struggle with social interactions and executive functioning skills.

What makes our program different from other social skills programs?

There are many places that teach social skills to kids. At SCS we believe in a deeper approach that teaches social thinking and the social skill. By doing this, kids can consider the perspective of others and determine what social skills are required at school, recess, home, and the community.

Do you offer online services?

Yes,  we offer individual virtual appointments for both social communication and executive functioning coaching for middle school through adult clients.  All groups meet in person at our clinic.
